Bilberries are dark colored berries found in Europe, belongs to genus Vaccinium. It is rich in antioxidants, known as anthocyanins and polyphenols. Bilberry is mostly known for its benefits in helping promote eye health, especially night vision. According to a World War II story, U.K.’s Royal Air Force pilots ate bilberry to improve their night vision. Bilberry is also used for treating disorders of the retina. Bilberries have also been used for medical conditions like hardening of the arteries, varicose veins, Diabetes, age-related macular degeneration and high cholesterol levels. In recent researches, It has been found that Bilberries helps increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels and helps decrease LDL(harmful cholesterol levels). Anthocyanins of bilberry may help reduce the inflammation in the body and may help in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases. In a Preclinical study, It has been observed that the active constituents found in Bilberry can help lower blood sugar levels probably by stimulating insulin production as well as by enhancing insulin secretion.
